Dangers of Radiation from Cell Phones for Seniors

Cell phones are very useful gadgets that have become part of modern human life. However, these mobile devices might also cause harm since they emit electromagnetic radiation that may have negative effects to the human body. Are radiation from mobile phones for seniors causing harm to elderly users?

Well, the debate on the dangerous effects of mobile phones is still raging. Some research indicate that cell phone radiation can cause insomnia, exacerbate irritability and cause concentration and memory issues. However, there is no definitive proof that using mobile phones can cause cancer and other life-threatening effects.

So what should concerned seniors do about the possible dangers of radiation from mobile phones? Well, the government ensures that cell phones pass a safe standard for radiation. Specific absorption rate (SAR) is a measurement of the rate at which energy is absorbed by the body when exposed to a radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic field. The FCC requires that phones sold have a SAR level at or below 1.6 watts per kilogram (W/kg) .

Seniors may also choose a device that has a low radiation emission or reduce the length of phone calls to six minutes or less. Some studies also show that the further the phone is, the lower the radiation impact so the using phone at least 20 to 30 centimeters from the body lessens exposure to radiation.

Using accessories such as headsets may also allow users to minimize the damage of radiation from cell phones for senior citizens. Headsets emit radiation but at a lower level than mobile phones.

That's it for this post on the dangers of radiation from cell phones for senior citizens. Standby for more news, updates and information on senior-friendly mobile phones and services.

The Danger of Walking While Talking on Cell Phones for Seniors

I have posted numerous cell phones for senior citizens in this blog but I also feel that it's important to inform readers of the dangers that come with these modern devices. A study has revealed that using a mobile phone for seniors while walking may increase an elderly user's chances of being run over by a vehicle.

The study which was that was published online Nov. 5 in the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention, aimed to measure the danger's of talking while walking on a mobile phone.

The results shows that participants trying to hold a phone conversation took 25 percent longer to cross the street compared with those without phones and those listening to iPods. Cell-phone users were also less likely to finish crossing the street in the 30 seconds. However, the figures got worst when it comes to seniors.

Art Kramer, a psychology professor at the University of Illinois who conducted the research says, "Older adults on the phone got run over about 15 percent more often [than those not on the phone]...walking and talking on the phone while old, especially, appears to be dangerous"

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that talking on a cell phone takes a bit of concentration which might put someone in danger if he or she happens to be crossing the street. This appears to be amplified for seniors so elderly users are advised not to use their handset while walking.

That's it for this post on the dangers of walking while talking on cell phones for seniors. Keep on dropping by to get more information on services and phones for senior citizens.

Recycle and Donate Cell Phones for Seniors

I've recently been read about recycling and donating old mobile phones because I have a few old working handsets at home.

I realized that the wireless phone industry is growing at a steady rate and the technology has reached great heights but cell phones also account for more than 65,000 tons of toxic waste each year. I also found out that a single cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of water. These figures illustrate the importance of recycling old handsets.

But what has recycling mobile phones to do with senior citizens? Well, it turns out that senior citizens benefit from programs and organizations that convince consumers to recycle and donate their mobile phones.

According to the folks at Charityguide.org, donated cell phones are reusable and can dial a 911 call center so they can be used as emergency lifelines for:
  • senior centers
  • senior citizens living alone, who are especially vulnerable to accidents
  • senior citizens with disabilities and limited incomes, who are especially vulnerable to elder abuse (physical abuse, assault, exploitation, or neglect)
Mobile phone collection drives have also been used to provide working telephones and 911 service to at-risk individuals, such as indigent senior citizens, who would otherwise be without phone service.

I guess it makes sense. Mobile phones that are usually donated for recycling are old models which possess characteristics that makes them suitable for elderly users. Many old models of handsets are easy-to-use devices with large buttons making them ideal cell phones for seniors.

I think donating mobile phones for seniors is a great idea. This way one can help elderly users and help to ease the burden that cell phone pollution is placing on the environment.

So how can one donate a cell phone for senior citizens? Well, it's fairly simple. You only need to type a few keywords into a search engine and you will get all the information you need on how to recycle and donate a mobile phone for seniors.

That's it for this post on recycling and donating cell phones for seniors. Tune in to this blog for more news and updates on senior-friendly mobile phones an services.

This accessory for compatible with cellphones for seniors that use Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity. The Nokia Wireless Loopset enables mobile calls to be accessed wirelessly through the hearing aid and can be worn around the user's neck.

Hearing Aid Compatible Cell Phones for Seniors

A large number of seniors need hearing aids to assist them when interacting with friends and family. Thus, a cell phone that's compatible with these gadgets for the hard of hearing will be useful for elderly with impaired auditory senses.

Mobile phones and hearting aids are not naturally compatible. This is due to the fact that the acoustic connection made between the cellphones and the hearing aid is poor and creates distortions in the sound. However, consumer needs paved the way for handsets that are compatible with these devices for the deaf.

The FCC has set the hearing aid compatibility standard for handsets. Devices that meet or exceed ANSI (American National Standards Institute) hearing aid compatibility standard are suitable for consumers with impaired hearing.

The devices are rated into: M3-handsets that has satisfied the ANSI standard and M4- handsets that has exceeded the ANSI standard.

However, it is also important to note that the label "hearing aid compatible" is not a guarantee that it will work perfectly for elderly users. The main problem is interference that may cause static buzzing sounds.

It is also important to remember that non-rated handset may also work with hearing aids.

Here is a list of the hearing aid compatible cell phones for seniors that I've featured on this blog:

  • LG VX4700
  • Binatone Speakeasy

The LG VX-4700 is a good device for seniors and users who have the misfortune of suffering from hearing difficulties. This handset is one highest rating phone for earset volume and has been tested to have great call quality.

The keys are also a bit small but they are slightly raised above the surface of the phone which makes dialing easy and fast.

Weaknesses:
The LG VX-4700 also has its share of drawbacks and flaws.

The external display is quite disappointing. This feature provides the time, the date, the battery life, the signal strength, and caller ID. However, it is very small and in monochrome.

LG LX 150: A Quality Basic Cellphone for Seniors

Are you ready for another ideal phone for your grand parents. I surfed a bit to find a simple phone that would suit the needs of senior citizens and came across the LG LX150.

This simple handset is the predecessor of the LG Flare, one of the phones I blogged about in the first few months after the creation of this site. Let's delve into the qualities of cell phone and see if it's equal to the Flare in being useful to the elderly.

The LG LX150 fits the definition of a basic phone. Now that doesn't mean that it's outdated. This handset offers a good set of features for a simple phone. It's great for calls and text messages but also offers modern features like Bluetooth and a full duplex speakerphone.

Users will like the design of this cellphone for senior citizens. It sports a clamshell design with dual displays. The external screen is monochrome but that makes essential information visible even when the user disables the screen’s backlight. The main screen is 1.75 inches in size with 262,000 hues. Users can change the backlight time and the font size to make the information on the display suitable to the often weak eyes of senior users.

The keypad on this mobile phone marks it as a good cell phone for seniors. The LG LX150 provides tactile dialing via buttons that are raised ever so slightly above the surface of the key pad. The users will also find dialing by feel easy with this phone because of the central column and good backlighting.

Test show that this phone performs well when making calls and when performing basic tasks. However, the performance of its speakerphone has been described as mediocre.

We live in a modern age but there are still plenty of easy to use cell phones for the elderly that are for sale in the market. Service providers have recognized that the senior market is growing and is a good source for business.

Let's look at some of the easy to use cell phones for the elderly that are offered by major manufacturers. Some of these phones have been featured on my blog and the rest are devices that I hope to cover in the future.

Easy to Use Cell Phones for the Elderly:

Sanyo cell phones: This company may not be among the top handset makers in the world but they sure do know how to make mobile phones that are suitable for grandparents. I've featured the Sanyo SCP 7050 and SCP 7000 in this site.

The New Samsung M240 Phone for Seniors

I was looking at some newly introduced phones when I saw a device that might be suitable for elderly users. The device was described as a basic phone and simple handsets are good candidates to be mobile phones for senior citizens so I was interested. Let us look at the Samsung M240 from Sprint and see if it can be a good device for our grandparents.

The Samsung M240 was launched recently but it does not appear to belong in 2009. It looks like a phone that should have been launched 5 years ago. Simply put, it cannot compete with most of the phones in the market when it comes to features. It is a simple phone with basic features and it lacks a camera.

However, being simple is an asset for a cell phone for seniors. Since it's a basic phone anybody can use it. Even seniors who are not tech-savvy. It doesn't take a genius to figure out how to make calls or send messages using this phone.

Unfortunately, the Samsung M240 appears to have a small display. It's adequate for a normal user but it may not be the best display for a senior.

The Samsung M240 cellphone for seniors shine when it comes to the keyboard. It sports a large keypad with big buttons that allows a user to easily dial a number or compose a text message. They are large enough that even users with poor eyesight will have no trouble distinguishing one key from another.

This new cell phone for seniors is also affordable so it can fit a senior citizen's limited budget. Sprint is currently selling the Samsung M240 mobile phone for seniors for a cheap price of $20 after rebate with new agreement.

So is the Samsung M240 a good cell phone for seniors? Well, it has three things going for it. This mobile phone has a good keypad, a cheap price and simple features. I feel that it will be good mobile phone for senor users.

That's it for this post on a new handset for elderly users. Tune in to this blog for more phones and services for senior citizens.
